Secret Service members and the Metropolitan Police Department were called to Ellipse Park shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, when a jogger saw a man he believed could be in need of medical attention.

When the officer went to check on the man, he found that he was already dead, launching an extensive investigation.

According to investigators who were able to obtain video of the incident, two men were involved in an altercation at the park shortly after 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Based on the video, officials said that a person of interest was identified and is being interviewed.

Police officials say that the man who was beaten to death was known by some business owners in the area, and that he may be a member of the homeless community. No other information was released by investigators early on Wednesday morning.

A metal pipe was recovered at the scene, according to police, and the body sustained multiple traumatic injuries, though the exact cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Chief Medical Examiner.

The investigation into the homicide is ongoing.

Anyone with information or who may have witnessed the fatal incident has been asked to contact the Metropolitan Police Department by calling (202) 727-9099.
